WELLINGTON v. SOUTHLAND. VICTORY FOR THE FORMER. WELLINGTON, August 10. There was an attendance of about 800 to 1000 people on Karori Park yesterday afternoon to witness tho second challenge game for tho hockey shield this season, •Southland v. Wellington. Tho ground was in good condition. Although Wellington won, tho fight put by Southland was by no moans a feeble one. They had all tho worst of the luck. The game was contested in excellent spirit. Slow exchanges characterised the opening stages, and for a time play centred in Southland’s twentyfive. Paul relieved for tho visitors, and set his forwards going. M‘E!downey and PulIvn defended successfully, however, getting the locals out of a tight corner. Presently tlie local forwards got moving with their characteristic dash, and Boyd finished off a fine piece of work by shooting a goal. Wellington 1. Southland nil. After the bully Wellington again became aggressive and Boyd, securing from his right, shot magnificently into tho net, but ho was off-side. Play" continued in Wellington’s favour for some time, but tho Southland forwards

were keen, and kept hammering away persistently The visitors became very dangerous when in their opponents’ circle, and it was only a smart bit of work on the part of Lobbio and Con St rack that got Wellington out of a fix. Southland were awarded a corner. Shortly after the visiting forwards led by Ivc (outside loft), gave Wellington a taste of their worth. The attack was a desperate one, and Dayer, coming too far out of goal, was unable to check it. It looked a sure thing for Southland, but Thomson swooped across and cleared when the ball was within a yard of the goal. Southland at last had to give way, and for the next 10 minutes the goals came thick against them. Con Strack secured the second goal in great style. Then after a spasmodic effort on the part of the challengers tiro Wellington forwards

again raced away, and Robbie sent in a O', litre to Boyd who scored. I’lay was hovering in Southland’s twenty-five when the ball came gut to Griffiths. This player was standing at an awkward angle, but bis accuracy told against Southland, who had to submit to a fourth goal being scored against them. The score at half-time was thus 4—o in favour of the holders. I. pou resumption of hostilities from the bully-off Wellington get within striking distance, but the opposing custodian was on the alert, and sent a shot out with his boot. At this stage the play was inclined to ho patchy, neither eleven purring much

energy into their work. After a brief visit to their own territory Southland aga : n returned, and Dwyer brought off still another brilliant save, iishig his hoot with good judgment. Wellington’s endeavour to increase their tally mot with no better result. They broke away, but only for a brief space, for the visitors were now mak ing determined efforts. The defence was, however, equal to the occasion, and the game ended with Wellington attacking, and the final score Wellington 4, Southland nil Messrs Mitchell and Gendall had charge of the game. CANTERBURY v. SOUTHLAND. CHRISTCHURCH, August 11. A hockey match. Canterbury v. Southland. was played to-day, and resulted in favour of the homo team hv 5 goa's to 4 goals.
