FIRE ON A LAUNCH.
INVERCARGILL, August 11. There was some excitement at the Bluff wharf about 8 o’clock this morning, as the result of -a launch catching fire. Messrs Dickson and Preston’s launch, the Viking, had Just left the wharf, en route to the fishing grounds, when, about 200 yards from the wharf, one of the party commenced t,o replenish the petrol tank. The tank suddenly overflowed, and the spirits becoming ignited by a lamp hanging close by, the craft was soon in a bln ze. The harbour board’s launch was immediately sent to the rescue, and towed th® burning launch back to the wharf, where a water hose was in readiness, and the flames were extinguished. The occupants escaped without, serious injuiry, and the damage is Estimated at a few pounds.
