The British open golf championship was won at Hoy lake on June 24 by the veteran English player, J. H. Taylor, with the fine aggregate of 304 strokes lor the four rounds oi 18 holes each, his score for the rounds in order being 73, 75, 77, and 79. This is his fifth open championship. Last year’s champion, Edward Kay, was second, with 512 strokes, his score by rounds being 75, 74, 81, and 84. Harry Vardon, who has won the open championship five times, tied with Michael Morgan, the Irises champion, for third and fourth places, with 313 each. Vardon’s score by rounds was 79, 75, 79, and 80. John J. M'Dermott, of Atlantic City, open golf champion of the United States, tied tor fifth and sixth places with T. G. Rcnouf, their grand aggregates being 315 each. M'Dermott’s score by rounds was 75, 80, 77, and 83. Tom L. M’Namara, of Wollaston, Mass., took 85 strokes to make the third round. His aggregate for the throe rounds was 243, as Ins scores for tho first and second rounds were 80 and 78. He was placed twenty-fourth, with an aggregate of 325 strokes for the four rounds, his score by rounds being 80, 78, 85, and 82. Among the intervening scores were those of Arnaud Massy, former French champion, 317; Alex. Herd and Graham, jun., 318 each; and Jas. Braid, 321. The monthly St. Andrew’s Cross Competition took place on the Balmacewcn Links on Saturday. Competitors were favouied with perfect weather conditions, and some good scores wore done, the colts” being again to the fore. H. H. Hutchison, with a net score of 75, won the medal.
