TOTALISATOR PERMITS.
MR WILFORD’S BILL KILLED. (From Our Own Correspondent.) WELLINGTON, July 31. Although Mr Wilford’s Gaining Act Amendment Bill, providmg for an unlimited increase of totalisator permits for one-day clubs, stood in a very favourable position in to-day’s Order Paper, the debate on the measure, which- was adjourned from last week, was not resumed. Owing to the long discussion in respect to the appointment of Mr Royd Garlick, it was a quarter to 11 before Mr Wilford’s Bill was readied. The Prime Minister then moved the adjournment of the House, and in doing so referred to the fact that they had already had two lengthy sittings this week. Mr Wilford asked the Prime Minister not to use his “brutal majority” to press the motion, but Mr Massey pointed out that, as the Bill had no chance of passing and as representations had been made to him on
iiho subject by several members, ho could not accede to the request. The House accordingly adjourned, and Mr Wilford’s Bill is thus definitely killed, so fax as this session at least is concerned. It is already stated that Mr Hunter’s Bill, providing for 30 extra permits for oneday clubs, may reach a discussion later on.
