UNIVERSITY CHAMPIONSHIPS.

VICTORIA COLLEGE WINS THE SHIELD. The annual inter-collegiate sports meeting between representatives of Auckland University College, Victoria College, Canterbury College, and Otago University was held on the Caledonian Ground on Monday. There were in all over 60 competitors, including a dozen in the open events. All the colleges were pretty evenly represented numerically, with the exception of Auckland, which owing to its greater distance, was unable to send such a strong team. So far the athletic shield which is annually competed for hii(? been won five times by Canterbury, four times by Otago, and once by Victoria College, and Otago won it last year. Otago's team was seriously weakened by the absence of M. Cowen from the sprint events, and of J. N. Millard, who won the long and high jump championships last year. The weather was foggy and threatening in the morning, but early in the afternoon it cleared up beautifully, and made the conditions almost ideal. Putting the Weight, the Long Jump, and the Mile and 220 Flat were decided in the forenoon, a start being made at 11.30. half an hour after the advertised time. Reid, of Otago, again outdistanced all rivals in Putting the Weight and established a new New Zealand University record for the event. His 37ft 34»n was just 3iin better than Ins last year's record. The Mile Flat race provided a keen and close contest. There were two competitors from each of the colleges except Auckland which had only one representative. Rutherford of Otago led for more than half the distance with Dougall (Canterbury College) and Reid (Victoria College) always handy. In the last round," however. Rutherford dropped back to third place, and a desperate finish was fought out between Reid and Dougall, Reid finally getting home by about a yard after an ex-

hausting effort. The result was something of a surprise in view of the fact that Dougall has won this event for the past four years in succession. According to the shield conditions, two points are allotted for a win and one for second place. A* the events were finished one by one Victoria College gradually asserted its supremacy, and finally won the shield with 17 points, as against Otago's 11, Canterbury's 10, and Auckland's 1. Otago University were without the valuable services of' J. N. Millard in the hurdling and jumping events. This noted performer in University sports is now teaching in Wellington, and it was not possible for him to make arrangements to come down to the meeting. A. S. Reid (Otago) put up a splendid throw in the hammer competition, beating his 93ft llin of 1911 bv 134 ft. The University standard from a* 7ft circle is 103 ft 3in, and Reid, from the specified ring, actually topped the standard by 3ft 2in—a remarkably fine achievement, for which he was heartily cheered. P. \V. B. Goodbehere (Wellington), showing his old form, annexed the 100 Yards Flat Championship and the 440 Yards Flat Championship. In the latter event, at half way, no ran clean away from the r«6t of the. field, and it took Thomas all his time to get within a yard of him at the finish. The Three-mile ' Flat Championship was another victory for Victoria College. The race was chiefly remarkable for the plucky fight put up by D. R, Rutherford (Otago). In the 220 Yards Flat Handicap (open) Opie was called on to give away too much to the front-markers, and at tlie close of the event he was only fourth in a field of seven. The starter. Mr W. Rudkin, sent the competitors away evenly throughout the day. In not one instance was there a ragged start. The various events resulted as under: PUTTING THE 16lb WEIGHT. Present champion, A. S.
