SUBSIDISED PRESS CABLES
THE AUSTRALIAN SERVICE. MELBOURNE, October 13. In the House of Representatives Mr Johnson pointed out that when the independent cable service was started members were led to believe that 300 newspapers were prepared to take its cables. Now they found that under a dozen were taking it after over £BOOO had been spent in subsidies. The ,Government would also do well to look at some of the scare headlines published in connection with the new service. As a financial transaction, they were concerned that in what the Government was subsidising there should not be a party misrepresentation of facts.
Mr Eisher replied that he could prove that the public had gained more than it had given up. He also indicated that the Government might increase the term over which the subsidy was payable, but it would not increase the annual amount.
