FIRE ON A STEAMER.
AUCKLAND, October 1. A fir© broke out early this morning on the steamer Kent, which, is now discharging cargo from Liverpool at the Queen street wharf. She was working cargo up till 10 o'clock last night, and everything was then apparently safe. The outbreak, for which no cause is assigned, was discovered about 1.30 a.m., and the city fire brigade got the flames under control after an hour's strenuous work. " The fire is believed to have started in a crate of straw packing. The vessel has apparently sustaned no damage, and the damage to the cargo will! not be known until a survey is made to-morrow.
