INDUSTRIAL FELICITY
SHIP-OWNERS AND THEIR EMPLOYEES. LONDON, September 29. At the annual dinner of the Sailors and Firemen's Union Mr T. L. Devitt and several leading ship-owners were present. Mr Havelook Wilson (secretary of the Seamen's Union) presided. In the course of Lis after dinner speech Mr Wilson said the union was endeavouring to promote good-feeing with the employers. He did not believe that shipowners in the past had always received the best value oat of the men. He suggested a pension scheme for seamen at 50 years of age, in order to encourage a good class to enter the service. Sir Walter Runciman, replying for the shipping ; industry, said that they had recently fought a well-conducted fight. He recognised that the seamen had a side' as well as themselves.
