"NOT GUILTY"
BULAWAYO SHOOTING CASE. SALISBURY, August 15. The jury brought in a verdict of " Not guilty " in the Lewis case. A large crowd cheered the result. In May last, at Bulawayo, a prominent resident (Mr Sam Lewis) went to the local newspaper office, had the native newsboys paraded, and picked out one who, he alleged, had made improper overtures to his little girls. Mr Lewis calmly marched the native to a piece of vacant ground behind the building and shot him dead. He then surrendered himself and was charged with murder, but was released on £SOOO bail. Publio subscriptions were tendered for his bail while the accused was in court, but these were not required. Public feeling in Bulawayo seemed almost entirely in Mr Lewis's favour, and a difficulty was expected in getting any jifry to convict him.
