SYDNEY, October 31. The Herald describes the Victorian Derby as a veritable boil-over. Right up to the rise of the barrier it. was all Tanami ; after that a lot of other horses •were mentioned, but Tanami was never heard of. The A.J.C. Derby winner started off as he finished—at the tail of the field. It was on the whole a well-con-ditioned field, the largest since Carnage ■won in 1892. When they lined up at the barrier St. Wyne was en the rails, and in extended order were Beverage, Indiscreet, Tanami, Hartfell, with Desert Rose on the outer wing. They were quickly despatched ©n their important mission in line, which ■was soon broken by Beverage, Desert Rose, •and Styria, while St. Wyne and Tanami dropped to the rear. Setting a sound pace, Beverage carried the field along the riverside until nearing the bridge, where JDesert Rose ran past him, and, fuHv maintaining the pace, conducted the field along ihe back to the half-mile post. Here ©everage, who had been kept' within easy striking- distance of the leader, again asTurned command, and. successfully resisting a bold challenge from 'Styria, who had escorted him into the straight, won by three-quarters of a length. Bobadea was four lengths away, and Hartfell next. The Telegraph says common consent allows that there was not a real smasher among the 11 starters, and that many winners of previous Derbies could have wiped the floor with' the lot. Desert Rose went to the front at the end of the second furlone, and carried the field along right, to (Who home tarn, where Beverage and Styria joined issue, but once in line for home the • »ne-eyed Beverage assumed control two lengths from Styria, and at the distance shook off a bold bid by that filly, and won by . a short length.
