October 31. —A welcome fhower now and again during the last fortnight has changed . ,ths colour of Nature to a decided green..,Growth has now become rapid, and (trass is coming away quickly. Ruin is still, how-, evc-r, badly needed if any harvest prospects arc to bs looked for. Trafalgar Day.—ln connection with the 1 school, Trafalgar Day was duly ■ observed ' on October 28. On the afternoon the children were massed in one of the rooms and addressed by Mr C. Darling, the lion, secretary of the Otago Branch of the Navj\. League. In the evening a lantern entertainment was given in the hall, at which? there was a very large, and enthusiastio gathering of scholars, their parents and friends. Mr F. Pithie, chairman of school committee, presided, and the head masteif' delivered a short address on ''The Objects of the Navy League" and "The School Branch." Thereafter a series of pictures was shown tracing the growth of the navy, from Viking to Dreadnought, Another series dealt with the sixteenth century sea-' dogs, and the Spanish Armada. The"main) pictures, however, were those concerning! "Nelson and Trafalgar," and they wera fittingly brought to a close by the son& "The Death of Nelson" finely rendered b? Mr C. Stewart. Other pictures illustrated the Waterloo campaign and the whol* finished with a group representing royalty/ During the programme the scholars ofr. Standard IV recited "England's Dead," andT Master Archie Mains "Ye , Mariners ol England." both poems being Three ringing cheers, as a vote of thanks,? brought, an interesting meeting to a close.i The accomnaniments for the evening werdf played by Misses Finlay and M'Ewan.
