CHURCH UNION
NEGOTIATIONS IN SCOTLAND. LONDON, June 1. The General Assemblies of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church have instructed the Joint Committee on Union to continue its deliberations and to present a complete report at the next assemblies.
Great satisfaction is expressed at the fact that the committee has conferred for a year without coming to an impasse.
The Rev. Norman MacLeod and Lord Balfour of Burleigh were optimistic. Dr George Robson, speaking in the United Free Church Assembly,, stated that the Joint Committee agreed that it was not just that the law only recognised the Established Church. The agreement up to this point was a hopeful sign. The chief difficulty would be to frame conditions of union. There was no way of infringing the Free Church's spiritual independence.
