PARADED FOR INSPECTION

The. Boy Scouts, to the number of close on 300, paraded on Saturday afternoon in the neighbourhood of the Triangle, under the command of District Commander Jones, along with whom were Lieut.-commander Oa,r;r and Adjutant Arthur. One of the objects of the parade was to give the Mayor (Mr J. H. Walker) an opportunity of seeing them. Some of the lads have not yet obtained uniforms, but that will no doubt be remedied in time. Their movements about the Triangle were very creditable, and it was -quite evident that the boys were thoroughly in earnest over their work. The following was the parade state: —Dunedin North, 3 scoutmasters and 56 scouts; South Dunedin, 3 and 30; North-East Valley, 2 and 22; Roslyn and Maori Hill, 3 and 50; and the chaplain (Major Gumming); Mosgiel, 2 and 31; Green Island, 2 and 12; Anderson Bay, 1 and 30: Ravensbourne, 1 and 15; Milton, 4- scouts (who cycled in) ; total, 291. The Cycle Corps comprised soouts from different troops. The Mayor addressed the Scouts in the Triangle, giving them sonie friendly advice and encouragement, also congratulating them on the good turnout. After the Mayor's address the troops were marched out to Anderson's Bay, where the troop commander received sealed instructions as to their route and places of attack. The supposed enemy was said to be in occupation of the bluestone house in the vicinity of Grant's Braes. The North Dunedin Troop formed the defending party, and took the opportunity of placing out pickets at given distances. All over the hill might be seen Scouts and khaki uniforms, some crawling, some crouching behind bush, others hidden in trenches, while the seat of the enemy was being watched. The defending party captured several troops, and then, owing to the shortness of the afternoon, the bugle was sounded for the fall-in, alter which the Scouts were marched to Mrs Grainger's residence, where tea was served out to the boys. By 6 o'clock the Scouts were on their way home after an excellent day's work. A new departure in the work was noticeable in the Cycling Corps attached to the brigade, these khaki-clad cyclists being engaged in carrying despatches, information in reference to imaginary accidents, and assisting generally in the work. It mav be mentioned that a patrol of Milton" Scouts cycled all the way from that district so as to take part in the manoeuvres.
