SOUTHDOWN FREEZING WORKS.

AUCKLAND, March 7. When the new men engaged by the Farmers' Freezing Company: to replace the strikers appeared at the works this morn-ing-the strikers made." an offer to resume under the old award,. provided the company would at once consider, their claims for increased wages, The company declined to give any promise, expressed or implied, but offered to take them back on the old terms. This they rejected, and the butchers refused to go to work with the new men. The company therefore has closed the works. One hundred men are thrown idle. It is stated that the union secretary refused to admit the new men to membership, although they were qualified under, the rules of the union and the terms of the award.

The position in connection with the strike at the Southdown freezing Works remains unaltered. The actual strikers are 14 gut-body hands and a dozen butchers, and°they have thrown out 70 men belonging- to other unions. Both sides are firm, and the prospects of a settlement within the npxt few days do not appear, very hopeful.
