An examination of the premises showed that the bomb had been placed beneath a writing table, and an electric wire, which ran outside the room, was attached to it. Karpoff entered the room, and was seated at the table when the bomb was exploded. The explosion rent a tremendous hole in the floor, and blew Karpoff to pieces, his legs being hurled through the cavity into the flat below. Vo6skressensky, who was on the staircase when the explosion took place, escaped, but was arrested subsequently in the street. An examination of Vosskressensky's papers led to the discovery of several maps and guide books on Finland. There were other papers which enabled the police to make a large number of arrests. There were indications that Vosskressensky was in Karpoff's pay as a secret agent, but was plotting with the revolutionaries. The popular opinion was that Karpoff was engaged in manufacturing false evidence. The incident caused a profound sensation at St. Petersburg, largely owing to the fact thai the Czar was expected to arrive for the funeral of his great uncle, the Grand Duke Michael. The Duma accepted an interpellation accusing the secret police ot participating in the aojs of terrorists, and asking the Government for the names of the secret police who were concerned in the Karpoff affair.
