RAILWAY DISASTERS
I BRUSSELS. January 23. j Some buildings at Charleroi collapsed t upon a passing train. Six persons were I kilkd. | OTTAWA, January 23. j A train at Sudbury (Ontario) ran off the. rails near Spanish River bridge. Several 1 of the ears plunged into the river, where there were 12in of ice. j Forty-eight persons are reported killed or drowned. January 24. A first class carriage and a dining car plunged 30ft into the river, and the second class cars crashed on a stone abutment, killing 20 people. Mr Reynolds, the guard, who was lunching in the dining car, dived out ' while the car was sinking, scaled the car, and assisted the smaller passengers .to escape through the ventilators. Then he smashed a hole in the roof with an axe, enabling seven others to escape. The car . finally caught fire. i A blizzard prevented the recovery of the bodies, the temperature being below , zero. j It is estimated that from 40 to 70 peopl* . were killed. i -
