A DISASTROUS FIRE
CONSTANTINOPLE, January 20. A fire, originating in a room between the Sultan's private apartments and the Chamber of Deputies, destroyed the Chiragan Palace, which was erected at a cost of £4,000,000. The outbreak is attributed to defective heating apparatus, though suggestions areafloat ascribing it to the reactionaries. The sailors from Russian and American gunboats were among the first on the scene, and they rendered splendid assistance, but all the archives of the chamber, the bilk in committee, and the Budget Estimates were burnt. Parliament will resume in the Tashkishla Barracks.
