Til© New Zealand telephone statistics continue to be a model for Australia (says the Melbourne Age), in the completeness of their revelations as to the financial position of the telephone business. The figures for 1908-1909, issued bythe Registrargeneral at Wellington, show that during the year ended March 31. 1909, the New Zealand telephones yielded 2.40 per cent, on a capital outlay of £591,760, after paying working expenses, which totalled £117,072. A new tent is about to be introduced into the German army, the novel feature of which is that it is divisible into two portions, each half being arranged so as to be used as an overcoat, by the soldiers in case of rain while marching. Mr Alexander Sinclair has presented to tha Timaru Borough Council for Caroline Bay a pared of seed of a sand binding grass, which he has received for the purpose from John o’ Groats.
