BLUESKIN A. AND P. SHOW.

The unexpected happened climatically on the 12th, foi the electrical downpour oj the previous day had passed, and the charmino* hills, valleys, and flats at Vv aitati looked at their best in bright weather to favour the forty-second show of the local Agricultural and Pastoral Society, these favouring inducements, coupled with the liberal prizes included in the society a schedule, brought a number of entries in the dairy cattle and horse classes that doubled previous records, and the gate money was visibly swelled compared with last year as a proof of growing popularity. In the afternoon the Hon. T. Mackenzie was welcomed to the show by the president (Mr G. C. Charlton), and he took the opportunity of renewing his acquaintance in the most cordial manner with many old friends. As might have been anticipated, from the distinctly pastoral character of the district, the exhibits of dairy cattle were vcr» numerous, and horses of the draught and hack class came a good second. Of sheep there wore none, save a fat wether penned, for a weight-guessing competition. The neglect of poultry farming was clearly shown bv a very poor exhibit of 13 pens for the 14- prizes offered, and not all were competed for. Dairy produce and swine wore conspicuous by their absence, but the attention of the visitors was kept up throughout the day by the parades in tha show rings of cattle of all ages and horse® of various capacities and heights—from numerous 'Denies to draughts and thorough-' bred®. These clayed many parts in saddle or harness, and were -sent into their respective competitions in the pink of condition. The judge of thoroughbreds (Mr J. O’Brien, of Oamaml was the hardest worked official on the ground, and his canine discernment passed unquestioned. In the dog class the judge (M>’ Heckler, of Waikouaiti) was not much distressed with his labours, and reported that three of tha collies entered in the rough class should have been entered in the bearded, and ona of the smooth class should have been en< tered in the roughs. A. farere number of the prizes offered may fairlv be classed with the «ide shows —like the sheep-guessing competition. There were pr ; res for pole rapes, where ponies were called upon ttf pivot themselves around posts not many yards from the starting point. Other non-los were urged bv their riders to faoa hurdles, but the non-jumpers pushed those obstacles down with their shoulders and

Bcra-mbled over the prone obstructions afterwords. These, however, were the items that varied the pleasures of the day, and will not be counted against the generally satisfactory results of the forty-second gathering of the society. _ The equestrian performances by the ladies were watched with special interest. In the hack competition one lady rede side-saddle and the other four (young girls) astride. The firstnamed displayed the best horsemanship without doubt, and was awarded first honours as the best rider. The prize list was os follows: COMPETITIONS. Hunter (eight entries) —A. S. Orbed 1, D.
