HOSPITAL TRUSTEES.

The ordinary weekly meeting of the Hospital Trustees, held on Monday, was attended by Messrs S. Solomon (chairman), E. A. Tapper, J. Loudon, J. H. Walker, J. M. Callaway, J. M‘Donald, John Mill, and Dr Batchelor. The Town Cleik, Dunedin, wrote stating that the trustees’ request for an annual tramway pass for use of their collector had been declined by the council’s Tramways Committee.—Received. Miss Tubman was appoinced probationer in place of Miss Sutherland, who could not accept the position.—The Chairman said that one of the good things done by the trustees had been the introduction of the system of making appointments by rotation, and he trusted the new board would continue this policy. It had done away with a great deal of “ log-rolling.” Things now went as smoothly as possible. It was decided that lectures could not commence till January 26, by which time the staff’s recommendation for the position of lecturer would be to hand. The Chairman said the trustees might feel sure that some persons who came into office after the elections would not be so familiar with the working of the institution as the present trustees were, and h© believed it would be a fitting termination to their work were they to try by every means in their power to hand over the Hospital in so complete a condition that it would require practically no improvements. Therefore, if they could see any means of improving the present condition of affairs, he hoped they would let him know. He looked upon the manner in which the institution would be handed over with pride.. This applied to all matters respecting the details of the Hospital excepting two. The plans before the trustees for the past two years had all been completed; but No. 1 ward had long been a source of grave anxiety to the trustees, and it was not as it ought to be. Then there was the question of treatment and accommodation of alcoholic oases. The trustees were quite determined, unless the new statute prevented it, to pledge the Hospital to rectify these matters. A quantity of routine business was transacted.
