AN INQUIRY.
PALMERSTON N., January 13. The stewards of the Manawatu Racing Club, after holding a long and exhaustive inquiry into the running of Equitas, in the Bummer Handicap, on the first day of the Manawatu Christmas meeting, passed motions to the following effect;—“After hearing further’ evidence from the owner and his explanation with regard to the betting on Equitas, i the inquiry, so far as it concerns the owner, be no further proceeded with. The stewards are not satisfied that Oliver pulled- Equitas -with the intention of preventing her from winning the race.” The evidence showed that Oliver, the jockey, rode an ill-judged race, pulling the filly at the back at a critical time, but the stable and those interested had backed her heavily to won, and had given instructions to the jockey to ride a waiting race.
