WELLINGTON NOTES.

By Oatoozsn.

January 16. To avoid clashing with the C.J.C.. Midsummer meeting the Pahiatua Racing Club brought the date of its annual meeting forward a fortnight. This alteration brought the fixture too close to the New Year meetings, and before the Wellington Cup meeting. The result was that the fields were much smaller than usual, and the totalizator turnover dropped to half what it was last year. The unfavourable weather on the opening day probably assisted tc reduce the tote investments. The club received a fair amount in fees from bookmakers. The jumpers seen out at the meeting were very moderate. Windage (Euro-clya'on—-Santa Katerina) scored his first win on the opening day. Gold Bird (a stable mate of Silken Rein and Longner) was making his first apneai-cnc© when ho won on the second day. F. Tilley, who is usually pretty fortunate at Pahiatua. took six homes to the meeting, and scored with two of them. The patron, who races as “F. Preston,” won the principal race each day with Milan (St. Ambrose —Waiwhera). Mr Preston put in an appearance on the second day of the meeting. That owner is fortunate to have at his command two such capable horsemen as R. Young and A. Oliver. R. Barlow brought Gyrene down from New Plymouth and he started three times, running his best race in the last race, when he was just beaten by Aberration, a most useful gelding in his class. He was well handled by H. Cairns on both days. Another double winner was the Fau Frau Spring mare, -Splash, who was well handled by T. Pritchard. That horseman also scored on To Ru in the open sprint, race on the first day. The Birkenhead gelding ran a good race on the second day, when Purakau (a stable mats of Gold Bird) won. To Ru and Aorea, members of C. Pritchard’s team may go down to Wingatui in February. They are both useful members in their class. The Palmerston trainer, T. Wilson, scored a win with Liquid Air (Explosion :—Toi Toi), who is only a moderate. Another moderate to score was Debonnaire (Daunt —Flatter), a member of F. Tilley’s lot. The owner of North-East Mr 11. M‘Manaway, scored with Sti.a.thmon.a (Soult —Hakea). The Wanganui-owned Chase Mab put down Debonnaire on the second day. Pukewai (W.aiuku—Miss Dargar), winner of a. double, at Wairarapa at New Year time, soared an easy win on the second day. He is to make his next appearance in the Trial Plate (hack conditions) at Trentham. Another successful performer to be seen out in the same event is the St. Ambrose filly, Sea Queen. Equitas will probably m'akei her next, appearance in the Wellington Cup. R. Young has been engaged to rid© her in that event. A. Oliver ha-s been secured for Rinardove, IT. Cairns Sand-stream, H. Gray Roosevelt, R. Lambess Sir Antrim, and E. Lowe Merrivonia. White Lie, Merriletta, and Merchantman, who have been competing at meetings on the West Coast of the South Island, returned this week. Investment’ remained behind for the autumn meetings. J. MbOombe is located at Trent ham with Tawhaki, Staybov, and Yoedsl. It is reported that IT. Cairns has been offered the riding for-D. J. Price’s Caulfield stable. R. J. Mason returned from Christchurch this week with Lady Rem a (full sister to Mjeriwa), who will represent Mr C. D. Greenwood in the Wellington Stakes.
