CANTERBURY DOINGS.

By Bbitz.

The weather during the oast week has o-ain been favourable for training - ooeratfons. and the Rio&arton trainers have been ou ah in st their charges alone - in view of immediate engagements. VVeUmpton will ■first claim attention, after winch there wifi he the summer meeting at Riccarton, followed later in February by the Dunedin Cup fixture which may be relied on to attract a strong contingent of Canterbury The two-year-old fitly Martyre, by Martian—Nantes, has been sold by Mr O G. Dalgety, her breeder, to Mr S. Nettlefold. I understand that she will be shipped

at an early data to Melbourne, where eho will probably go into D. J. Price’s stable. Mr J. L. Carl's two-year-old filly Rcseliko, by Multiform —Soult Rose, was brought down from Auckland last week, and has been placed under the care of R. Derrett. The filly had a bad trip, and was somewhat knocked about when she arrived.

I hear there is a prospect of more than one local trotting horse-owner journeying ;o Melbourne in order to be present at the Allendale Stock Farm sale, which will be held early in March. F. Holmes, who is equally well known as a trainer of trotters and gallopers, contemplates a trip to America at an early date. If he goes he is pretty certain to bring some horses back with him, and it is on the cards that a stallion may be included.

The new track at the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s course is in capital order at present, and is very highly spoken of by tho trainers. Resides being increased in size, tho shape has been improved, and it is now much faster than formerly. If the ctories I have heard are to be relied on, we may expect to see something exceptional in the way of times at the next meeting.

The Malvern Trotting Club brought off a very successful fixture at- Sheffield on Thursday. The club has no totalisator permit, but nine bookmakers were present, and they did a big business. The weather was fine, and there was a fair attendance, though many local residents were absent on account of harvesting operations. The track was very rough in places, as well as being dusty. There is too little room in the straight for big fields to start, and several horses had their prospects ruined from this cause. Large fields competed throughout the day, tho average number of starters beiug_ 12 per race, and the sport was full of interest. The'Maiden Handicap attracted a field of nine, and a good race ended in Novelwood beating Good-bye by a length. The winner is well bred, being by Wildwood—Novelette, a thoroughbred mare by Smith O’Brien—Novice. Teresina, who finished third, is a neat little thing by Pygmalion —Teresa, but she is very flighty, and will need a lot of educating before she does much good. Eighteen lined _up for the Sheffield Handicap, which provided another good contest. St. Cyrus, with R. M'Millan as a pilot, just lasted long enough to win from Dorothy D, with Coiner, who finished fast, close up. St. Cyrus did not impress me as a good one, and she seemed to have very little in reserve at any part of the race. ' Imperial Polly put up a fine performance, but she bad no chance of catching the placed horses. Thirteen was the main for the Homobush Handicap, in which Gold Reef, who, like St. Cyrus, is by Prince Imperial, was in front nearly all the way,. The feature of tho race was the display of speed given by Elector. He was seen in saddle, and be got oyer the ground at. a rare gait, which carried him into second place, a dozen lengths behind the winner. Miramar, one of the beaten lot. is a throe-year-old sister to the speedy Wild Wind, by Wildwood' —Wild Wave. The Bangor Handicap, for which there were 15 starters, resulted in an easy win for Coiner. There was a good contest till about two furlongs and a-half from home, when Erin’s Tracy and Lord Cardigan, who were on terms with Coiner, broke badly, and spoilt the finish. The Midland Handicap attracted a, field of 11. First Teresina and then Dorothy D showed the way, but Prinz had their measure all the .way, and he won very easily from Bazil. who beat Dorothy D. by two lengths, with Teresina close up. The *winner is a four-year-old by Valiant (VaucTs ve —-Swallow), from Fraulein, th-ei ■dam of Fritz. He is a small but very shapely horse, full of quality, and I will be surprised if hd does not develop into a high-class performer. Eighty was the main for the Ladies’ Bracelet Handicap. There was a good contest between Gold Reef and Electric Bell till nearly two furlongs from home, when Electric Bell fell, and Gold Reef won easily from Novelwood, none of the others finishing. Electric Bell escaped without injury, but luis driver, ,Mr J. Gemm-ell. was badly cut about the head. The day’s sport was brought to a close with tho Domain Handicap, for which there wore nine starters. For the greater part of the journey there was an interesting race, but Dorothy D. won easily, at the finish from Pendulum, who just, beat Bazil for second place.

The South Canterbury Trotting Club’s meeting will bo held on the 1 Washdyke course on Thursday. _ Excellent acceptances have been received, and the sport promises to be particularly good. Visitors from Christchurch have' been catered for by the Railway Department, a special train having been arranged for, so that the trip can be made in a. single day. Redmond. G. A. Pina’s jockey’s -license was withdrawn, and J. Lindsay’s application for a license was refused. The appeal of H. Leaman against the action of the Kaikoura Racing Club, in dismissing the protest against Tabu, on the ground that he was trained by a disqualified person, was referred .to the Appeal Committee. A caution was administered to R. Ellis, who was reported by the Hororata Racing Club for misconduct. The following transfers were approved: —H. Gaisford to B. Christie, b f, by Stepniak—Royal Plumes; to J. Buckley, blk f Madbura, by Stepniak Madder, 2yrs ; to J. M‘Combe, b c Tawbald, by Menach ikoff—Arm ilia, 3yrs; W. Robertson to W. Grand Slam, wlio .is now- owned by Mr F. Cla ridge, may be given a chance to earn distinction over hurdles. Twelve yearlings purchased by Mr Greenwood in Auckland, arrived on Saturday, after a good trip down. Miss Mischief ie still in Auckland, as she has hot reooverod from the lamepess which developed after her Goodlwootl Handicap win on the fourth' day of the Eller die fixture.

' Southern. Cross has been taken in hand ‘ after a spell, and will be prepared f or winter racing. Paragon is now quartered at Riocarton, under the care of T. W. Price. Canterbury stables will be well represented at the Wellington meetings. There, are ten horses from here already on. the > scene, and 11 more are on the way or are ; under orders for the north. Those leaving ’ this week include Husbandman, Broad- ! sword, Saxifrage-, Ringdove, Crown Derby, Silkweb, Genius. Guiauforte, and Formless.
