EXPORT OF EGGS.
PROMISING EXPERIMENT. (From Ouk Own Correspondent"! CHRISTCHURCH, January 12. The export of eggs from New Zealand is said to be an industry that has not yet been developed owing to the great cost of cold storage to London. In October of last year, however, Mr J. B. Merrett, of Christchurch, forwarded a shipment of 14,000 eggs to London, and the particulars of the returns just to hand are most gratifying to him. He adopted the method of preserving the eggs on the French system of “ vapourising” them hi a machine, and it proved eminently satisfactory. The eggs were landed in excellent condition without single
breakage, and sold at Is Id a. dozen in the open market. There is, he says, an unlimited demand for eggs in London during November, December, and January, and this is fortunate for New Zealand, where eggs are most plentiful in August, September, and October. Mr Merrett intends to make , a further shipment by the Corinthic this month.
