NOTES BY JACK-

Secretaries are requested to forward particular! of games played and of forthcoming- matches.

The. N.Z. Bowling- Association tournament, which is to bs held under the control and management of the Duncdki Centre, beg inning on Monday next, promises to be a great success so far ats fee number of entries is coneoTned, and all that is. required is fine weather. Committ3.es in connection with the tournament have been hard at work for some time, and have all arrangements well in hand. The Social Committee has met representatives from the various clubs ill the centre, and as it is desirous that all clubs should have uniformity in the manner in which refreshments are supplied, it has been requested that all clubs whose greens are occupied should observe the following hours in carrying out the morning and afternoon tea to the playing bowlers: — Monday.—No morning tea; afternoon tea from 3.15 to 4.30. Tuesday.—Morning, 10.30 to 11.15; afternoon, 4 to 5.15. Wednesday:—Morning, 10.30 to 11.45; afternoon, 4 to 6.15. Thursday.—Morning, 11 to 12.45; afternoon, 3.30 to 5. On Friday the play will be confined to the Dunedin Green, and the catering for the playing bowlers for this day was left in the hands of Mr W. M. Hogg, the secretary of the Dunedin Bowling Club's Social Committee. The Dunedin Centre is allowing, for catering purposes, 30s per day to each club whose green is used for play, each club to carry out its own arrangements. The morning and afternoon tea is to include cordials and other light refreshing drinks. The smoke concert and presentation of prizes is to be held on Friday evening, 21st inst., at the Early Settlers' Hall. The friendly interciub matches were resumed in the Dunedin Centre on Saturday. Quite a feature of these was the bold front presented by two of the countryclubs. Outran} on their own green suffered defeat, but succeeded in winning in two of the rinks —Anderson's rink accounting for that skipped by the veteran M. Sinclair by 24 to 10, .w'hile Wildey got home against Johnson by 17 to 15. Hunter, another veteran Dunedin' skip, defeated M'Leod by a majority of 15 points, 'Crow

beat Buchanan by 15 points; and Hogg- pub down Withers by 12 points. Fairfield came- within 3 points of Otago 1 in a six-rink gam©, which is another fine performance for the season. On the Fairfield Green two of the home rinks were successful, Ross beating Glover to the tune of 29 to 18, while Christie beat Gordon by 26 to 19. Watts, for Otago, had an aidvantage of 20 points over Anderson,. On the Otago Green the only Fairfield rink to win was that of M'Lauehlan, the score being 30 to O. It. Smith's 18. Cook managed to draw against _ Fynmore, but M'Grath was down 13 against Cooke. Balmacewen Club did not bring off any surprise on Saturday, the teams put forward by Kaituna being solid. As a matter of fact, Armstrong and Adamson were the only two Balmacewen players who had an • advantage, and in their ease it was only a matter of 2 points and 1 point respectively. Armstrong- had 1 a. veteran against him in 0. T. Paterson, so that his win has much merit, while Haslett was Adamson's opponent. The winning Kaituna. skips were Baillie, Sanders, Stokes, Bailey, M'Pihereon, and F. Smith. Balmacewen was without the services of Balk, who has been playing well this season. Port Chalmers finished only 5 points behind Roslyn in, a six-rink match. On their own green two of the Port rinks were leading, Hillicr having a lead of 8 points against Gregory, while M'Laehlam, who is rapidly coming to the front, accounted for Wedderspoon by 23 to 15. Collier was 2 paints down to D. Scott. On Roslyn Green Walker accounted for Mathoson by 24- to 14, but Soou'lar rattled up 31 to Thomson's 16, amd R. H. Scott put on 29 to Ma.tthews's 15. Scott has a fine record for the season so far. It wae not anticipated that St. Clair would put down four Taieri rinks, but it was scarcely expected that the seaside plavers would be 51 points to the bad. But Carswell, M'lntyre, and T. Mackie, with their tournament rinks, were out for scalps, and they secured them. M'lintyre's majority over Hancock was 16, CarsweU's over Sherwood 28, and Mackie's over Piddington 8. Jolly, with an Invercargill player in third place, accounted for Stevenson, the Taieri skip, by 21 to 18. There was a close game between N.E. Valley and Caversham, : each club having won in four of the rinks. The damage was done by Begs'® rink, who were 19 points aherd of Robertson. Barnes had a lead of 13 points oven- Walker, Thomson had a lead of 5 against Mitchell, while Wa.tkine was 3 up against Tillie. For Oaversham, Dempster led Murray by 4 points. Mwrohison beat Dunn by 11 points, Cleland beat Frame by 8 points, -and M'Gregor defeated his namesake, afeb' by 8 points. Caledonians mixed up the rinks pub against Mornington- considerably, but they made no race of it, winning by 80 points. St. Kilda also watered down the rinks put against Wakari. with the result that the hill team only lost by 73 points, the rinks skipped by Gordon winning its game by a majority of 17 points, while G. Johnston was only 1 point clown to Ewing. The tournament faeid by the Wellington Centre during the Christmas and New Year holidays appears to :have been an undoubted' success, and Mr Churchward, the secretary and organiser, is being warmly congratulated by those who took •part on the completeness of his arrangements. The 60 rinks which entered were divided into six sections, and every rink played eight .games c;f 16 heads. Some exciting games resulted, and some surprises' ■■ were sprung."- Webb's Wellington .rink, winners ' of section 6, put. up the record by pulling it off without a loss. In the play-off between section winners Webb was defeated by a Newton rink skipped by Wylie, while Pairata, of the Te Hiwi Club, defeated Hueston, of tib.e Victoria Club. In the semi-final Parata was defeated by Wylie, while Powell, of the New-town Club, defeated his club-mates skipped bv Roberts. The finals resulted as follows:—Warwick. Duff. Pollock, Wvlie te), 19, beat. Cant. Noble, Webb. Powell (s), 14. In presenting the prizes Mr Hues- ; ton (chaiiv.nan of the centre) stated that the I centre proposed to stretch out a bit next ! year, when no other tournament would be ■ held. There would be something more than a two days' tournament —but he did not want to say too much, just enough to whet tV± appetite. The new bowling green laid down by Mr A. Weir at Broad Bay was onened on the 3rd inat., Mrs Weir fending down the first bowl. A visiting team from town consisting of Messrs A. Black, son. W. M. . Hoirg- A. Black jun. and J. G. Bentley I (skip) played V. representative team of Broad Bav bowlers consisting of Messrs T. A. Maitland, H. Neiiil, W. C. Burt, and W. A. Scott (skip). The green played exceptionally well and has the makings of one of the finest greemls in. New Zealand owing to the situation and the foil. The game ended in a_ wan for the visitors by <JO to 16. Bowlers visiting- Broad Bay can now enjoy, in addition to the otb*r attractions of the place, a good game of what is fast becoming- a modern pastime. DUNEDIN CENTRE. A meeting of the committee of the Dunedin Centre of the New Zealand BowlingAssociation was held on the 10th, Mr R. xl. tecott being in the chair. It was stated that the Dunedin Club had acceded to the request that its green might be the headquarters green during the tournament. The eight greens selected for the rink tournament were .—Dunedin, Caledonian, Kaituna. North-East Vallev, Roslyn, Mornlngton. Balmacewen. and Green Island. If a ninth green was found necessary it was decided to utilise St. Kilda Green. The Chairman stated that all the greens except Outram and Port Chalmers, would be used for the Doubles, but matters in connection with this competition will be definitely fixed the next evenino- at 730 The Secretary (Mr H. F. M. Mercer) was empowered to procure such clerical assistance as he required for the first four days of the tournament.

The matter of appointing umpires for the various greens was discussed at some length, but beyond an understanding being come to that, members of the Centre Committee should act, or empower someone to act for them, nothing very definite was arrived at. One thing emphasised was +" necessity for umpires paying strict attention to keeping the results of all games posted on the record sheets on each green. The questions of prohibiting competitors following - up their bowls after delivery and insisting on spectators abstaining from sitting on the bank with their feet in the ditch were ventilated. A motion wae moved that, in the event of a competitor running up the green after his bowl after being warned not to do so, the umpire should have power to burn the bowl if he

thought fit.—lt was suggested that this waa rather a recommendation for the council, and it was. finally decided that the matter be mentioned to the president (Mr J. M. Gallaway), with the object of its being brought under the notice of the council. Mr" Short stated that at a meeting of the executive of the Dunedin Club last month Mr M. Sinclair had brought up the question of burnt heads. His idea was that should a kitty be burned that was driven into the next rink players should continue the game, and endeavour to get as close to the kitty as possible without thenbowls going outside the limits of the rink. The tournament was considered To be too close at hand to go into the matter. Following are the entries for the rink tournament:—Dunedin Centre, 44; Christchurch Centre, 13; South Canterbury, 5; North Otago, 3; Southland, 13; South Otaix). 7; Northern Association, 3;— total, 88.
