THERMAL ACTIVITY. AUCKLAND, October 4.
The geysers at Whakarewarewa. were exceptionally active last week, and large numbers of visitors daily visited- the Government reserve. Up till Wednesday afternoon WaLkorohihi attracted much attention and on one occasion it played for over 22 hours without intermission. Soon after Waikorohihi ceased Pohutu's Cauldron (Te Hovu) became active, sending up good shots of from 20ft to 30ft at frequent intervals. Pohutu Geyeer commenoed to play at 3.20 p.m. on Wednesday, and continued active for an hour. Several tourists who were in the reserve at the time were delighted with these thermal eruptions. On Thursday at 3 p.m. Wairoa Geyser was called upon to play, the necessary soap being applied by a member of a visiting party. Within. 16 minutes from the time of the application of the 6oap Wairoa responded, sending a column of steaming water to a height of about 120 ft, to the wonder and delight of the 250 people present. Wairoa continued in a state of eruption for about 45 minutes, and as aJI the other geysers, with the exception of Pohutu, were playing at the same time visitors had a good view of the reserve under very favourable circumstances. Waikorohihi Geyser continued to play throughout Thureday night and until 11 a.m. on Friday The Prince of Wales Feather Geyser was also active on Friday, while Pohuiu Geyser again gave a display, playing from 9.20 a.m. until 10.6 a.m.
