SHIPPING DELAYED. WELLINGTON, January 17.
A tremendous sea was running in Cook Strait yesterday morninic, the largest and angriest for years, according to the testimony of Seatoun and Karaka Bay residents. The fierce southerly gale disorganised) the movements of the " mosquito " fleet of steamers, while the after effects were visible in a large rollicking swell and foaming breakers from Palli&er Bay to Terawhiti. The Penguin had a rough passage irou^ I'icton. A bi^ sea swept aboard, an*T smashed two deck forms and destroyed the after binnacle. The Whangape, which arrived from Newcastle yesterday morning, had a very rough time in Ccdk Strait. stas broke over th-e vessel. One huge wave tore away and broke into fragments the butcher's deck-house. Other sfigbl damage was done and the deck cargo of timber was loosened. LYTTELTON, January 16. The heavy southerly gale on the coast has caused considerable delay among the coastal steameis. The ferry steamer Maori took 14 houis to come from Wellington to Lyttelton, and uonscqutntly missed the first expi^s south this morning. She had a very rough tiip.
