A WOMAN MISSING.

SUPPOSED SUICIDE. CHRISTCHURCH, January 15. A young woman named Mary Donovan joined the Mokoia at Auckland last week 'as a steerage passenger booked for L\ Helton, whence phe was to be conveyed to the Magdalen Home at Mount Magdala. j From inquiries made by the police the i woman was seen by a police officer at eacli port of call down the East Coast, and was on board the Mokoia when that vessel left Wellington last Friday night. When the Mokoia . arrived at Lyttelton on Saturday morning the police went on board to take charge of the woman, but were unable to find any trace of her, and it was at the time supposed that she must i have got ashore unobserved or was in hiding somewhere on board. The Mokoia proceeded on her journey to Dunedin on Saturday night, and returned to Lyttelion on Wednesday morning, but in the interval nothing was seen of the missing woman, either on board the steamer or ashore. From inquiries made on board concerning the lost woman the police at , Lyttelton ascertained that one of the t I forecabin stewards saw her walking about the decks on Friday night shortly before midnight, when the steamer was between Wellington and Lyttelton. Borne wearing apparel was found on board, and is now in the custody of the police, who incline to the belief that the woman committed suicide by jumping overboard early on Saturday morning. Further inquiries are being made, but it seems hardly probable that any other solution of the mysterious disappearance will be forthcoming, i January 16. Nothing fuither has transpired regarding the disappearance of the woman Mary - Donovan from the steamer Mokoia. during the passage from Wellington to Lyttelton last week. It has been ascertained, however, that after being^ spoken to by one of the stewards shortly before midnight on the Bth infct., the woman went to her cabin. She removed her hat, and then

told the other passenger occupying the same cabin that it was too stuffy, and that she would go on deck.
