BUSH FIRES.
SYDNEY, January 6. Reports from the fire-swept districts disclose widespread devastation. The settlers along the Hawkesbury Valley, the south coast, and the Hunter' River dostriots are severe sufferers, many having lost their entire crops', and some their homesteads. "There were thrilling stories of narrow escapes and heroic rescue -work. In the pastoral districts, besides many thousands of .acres of grass an>d crops, large numbers of cattle and sheep perished. Great havoc was wrought amongst the poultry. The heat wave has broken, and a cool change set in last night, accompanied by light rain in the south-eastern districts.
