COUNTRY DEVASTATED BY FIRE. SYDNEY, January 1. Destructive bush \ fires in the Blue Mountains destroyed many beauty spots. In the Gundagai district the fires have swept many thousands of acres. The fire has a frontage of 25 miles. j Destructive outbreaks have occurred in the Cowra and Cootamundra districts. At the former the jßre was 16 miles wide. January 2. < The heat wave continues unabated. At Menindie yesterday the thermometer registered 118, and 119 at Murwillumbah. . The latter place is surrounded with bush fires, which are also raging in many districts. , January 4. Only on five other occasions in 50 years has Sydney experienced heat like that of yesterday. The heat at Bourke" was the gieatest for 30 years. The hot weathei still prevails in the country. A great fire threatened Nowra. The townspeople turned out, and succeeded in saving the town, but the country round about was devastated. The CaTdifi-Sydney telegraph service is dis*arranged owing to the bush fires.
