SOUTH CANTERBURY SPORTS.
TIWARU, January 1. The sports gathering of tie South Canterbury Caledonian Society was held today in fine weather and in the presence of a crowd estimated at 7500. The attendance was not quite so large as that a>t last; year's gathering for the corresponding day, and the receipts (£295) show a slight falling off. Excellent sport was witnessed, the> amateur events baiag specially good. The cycling was somewhat disappointing owing to a large number of intending starters deciding at the lost moment to go to the Oamaru gathering-. The Mils and a-haJf Caledonian Wheel Race wao won by A. Bonis from 75yd?, the Mile Bicycle by J. T. Denaris, the Half-mule by F. J. Twiss, arfid the Two-mile Scratch Race by B. Campion. In the- running events the 75yds Handicap fell /to L. Wood, the 300 yds Am.at.aiu- Handicap to J. Allan, the 440 yds to V. Duvall (who wa« =piked in the race and had afterwards to bo tafce-n to Hie hospital). The 440 yds Amateur Handicao fell to W. F. Trembath, the Mile to J. Beatson, and the 220 yds Handicap to T. Shannon.
