ANNUAL SPORTS. The thirty-fifth annual sports gathering • under the- auspices of the Strath-Taien Caledonian Society was held at Middleanarch on New- Year's Day on the grounds of the A. and P. Society. Since the holding of last year's sports gathering the lastnamed body has almost completed its large ihali/ committee room, etc., and the secretarial- and other official convenience? in this dbmmodious building were made full use of by the Caledonian Society in carrying Out ita annuaL sports programme. The society bad its origin about 35 years ago on Cottesbrook Station, some two miles and a^-half from the present town of. Middlemarch, where a number of shearers organ j ised an. annual sports gathering, which eventually merged into the present society. The running track in the 10-acre paddock adjoining 1 the -hall is 440 yds in circuit, and•was in fairly good condition yesterday after the recent welcome rains, although a few wet spots on the inside running interfered to come extent with the performances of Eome of the competitors. The principal interest in the gathering centred round the 12Gyds and 220 yds foot events, the cyclingracing, and the Cumberland and Catch-aa-Cafcch-Can wrestling ; but the events generally were watched with close interest by a. large gathering of interested spectators, many of whom came from Dunedin by railway. Among the visitors on the ground •were Mr T. Mackenzie, M.P., and the principal residents of the surrounding country. The Middlemarch Brass Band, tinder the conductorship of Mr J. H. Matheeon, was on the ground all day, and played selections which showed careful practice, j Mr R. Walker, the obliging and courteous , 6ecretajry, had a. busy day in taking entries ', and carrying out his numerous secretarial j iduties, but lie was never too busy to afford i •information, to anyone requiring it, and . press representatives are indebted to him for his assistance in enabling them to com- j pile their reports. The total amount of j prize-money paid out at the gathering ■ funounted to £60, and the takings at the gate were £44 18s 6d.- The sports gather- ) ing finished in the evening with the usual ball, which was largely attended. Pedofsky dropped out in the second lap, and the finish was fought out between Peat and Wroble, the former winning by a yard from, the latter, who was closely pressed by Cunningham. 440 Yards Handicap.— F. Christie, who was 50 yards behind in the seventh lap. pulled up to Hanson and Walquist on the nexi lap, and the three raced together for several laps, the two scratch men racing with the evident intention of putting their best effort into the last lap. and when the bell rang for the final la.p Christie wont up with a grand spurt and challenged Hanson, a hard tussle eventuating up to the back of the track, when it became evident that Hanson had a lot left in him and t-hat -Christie had shot his bolt. Coming into the straight, Hanson, with a supreme effort, led Christie by half a dozen yards which he increased to a dozen yards before the tape was reached, winning as he liked. Walquist, who rode a good race, was some distance behind. Time, 15mifl 25sec. The Heaw-weight Catch-as-Catch-Ca-n Wrestling had not concluded when the 5.15 p.m. train left.
