COSTLEY TRAINING HOME.
INSTITUTE TO BE CLOSED.
AUCKLAND, December 24. The trustees of the Costley Training Institute for Boys have decided to close the institute and sell the Richmond road property and invest the proceeds. The institute has been worked under financial disadvantages, despite the Government subsiHy towards its support. A difficulty has been experienced in getting suitable, boys for inmates. The maximum number for" some months has been about 19, while the institute has a capacity for double that number. The institute can only admit boys committed to an industrial school by a magistrate's order, ?nd the policy of the Industrial School Department and the Charitable Aid Board favours boarding out the boys rather than committing them to the institution, where boys of mature years are brought into close connection with young boys. The class of boys received, moreover, is frequently unfitted for apprenticeship to trades and to withstand the temptations of city life.
