NEW ZEALAND CHESS ASSOCIATION.

The December quarterly meeting^ of the. New Zealand Chess Association, held m Wellington on the 2nd .inst., was attended by Messrs J. A. Connell (Wairoa), in the chair; C. W. Tanner (Canterbury), J. G. W. Dsllymple and J. Miles (Wellington Working Man's Cub), F. W. Collins (Wellington C.C.), W. E. Mason (Oamaru), F. K. Kelling (Wanganui and Mastertou), and A. G. Feu (lion, secretary). Mr Fell reported that designs were not yet to hand for the championship trophy, for which the sum of £10 "was allocated at the June meeting. The trophy will have room foi the names of past champions, and also for the names of future champions for many years to come. R-ev. Fox (Tinwald) wrote asking when entries closed for the champion congress comj mencing in Dunedin on Boxing Day, and also to whom entries should be addressed. The Wellington Club nominated as its competitors Messrs O. Davies (the present champion) and John Mason. The former has decided to come across from Sydney to defend the * championship. The Working Men's ' Club nominated Messrs R. g. Barnes and , F. K. Xelling as its competitors. Mr O. C. Pleaeant3 (Rangitikei) wrote accepting office as cue of the \ ice-presidents for the southern half of the North Island Mr F. B. Sharp notified that he had ceased to act as delegate for the Timaru C.C. and j ; Auckland Working Men's Club. The following clubs remitted subscriptions: Otago C.C, Auckland C.C, and Auckland Working Men's Club. The Wairca- €.C. notified that, owing to reduction in its roll of members, it would nrobably have to forego membership of thp association. The Otago hon. secretary (Mr Doddq) wrote regarding several matters affecting the championship tourney, commencing in Dunedin on Boxing Day. It »va« rlecded to place clocks at the disposal cf the Otago Congress CommiUee, and also to remit the fuuj of £20 for prizes. It was a! c o decided to appoint Messrs W. E. Mason. W. ifackay, and P. Still as a. "weeding out" committee to weed out the weaker games eniered for the brilliancy prize. A further report was received from Mr Hollins regarding the brilliancy prize of the congress held in Wellington last Easter. Mr Hoilins stated that the game which he had previously recommended might not be up to the standard of previous years, mainly owing I to fhe weak defence of the loeer. but it .was the best, and it was also briiliant. Standards were apt to vary from year to year, and h»- recommended that, the prize" be awarded to Mr Davies. On the motion of M"r Connell it was unanimously decided to award the prize to Mr Davies, and to present the trophy at Dunedin during the forthcoming congress It was unanimously decided to invite Mr Hollins to continue to act as adjudicator of the brilliancy prize, and also to write to a South Island club which is considerably in arrears with its subscription A hearty vote of thanks to Mr Connell for presiding closed the meeting-.
