THE DAIRY REGULATIONS.
Mr T. Buxton, the newly-e-lccted member for Geraldiue, finding a general impression among the farmers of the distri.^ that the new dairy regulations were about to be enforced, sent the following telegram to Sir Joseph Ward: — "Would it be pw sible to .have dairy regulations passed last session, suspended until House meets.? Inspectors have given notice to owners of even one cow to concrete" yards," bails, etc These regulations are far too exacting, and will result in many of our small farmers and dairymen having to give, up dairying-. The whole of my electorate will be much inconvenienced and harassed under theeo restrictions." ' ~~
Mr Buxton received the following reply from the Prime Minister 1 : — "Re your telegram of yesterday, the dairy regulations are not in operation. They have never been approved b% the Government; thejr are not gazetted, and there are- no daky l inspectors gazetted tinder the act. Thar* must be some mistaken impression concerning the position in your locality. You her© my authority foi stating that the position is as indicated both by the Hon. Mr M'Nab, Minister of Agriculture, and by" myself, in different portions of the country — namely, that the recommendations of the Stock Committee concerning the regulations, have not yet been considered by the Government, and that there will be full opportunity given to the farmers and others to thoroughly consider before anything is finally decided, which in any case willnot oe for the next six months. ' These remarks- do not, of course, apply to Jhe dairy, regulations for local consumption, which have been in force since 1901, and which deal with the milk sold for human consumption In New Zealand. — J. G. Ward."
