PALMERSTON SHOW

A SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION

" The twenty-eighth annual show of the Palmerston and Waihemo County A. and P. Association was held on the 4th at Palmerston, and was in every way a success. The weather was alj that could be desired, and the attendance constituted a record; for the fixture. The Palmerston show ground is one of the best in the province from a spectator's point of view, the show ring being in the nature of an amphitheatre. All round about is a sward of grass that tempts one to lie down, and when conditions were such as yesterday, the temptation was increased. The management was all that could be desired, Mr Wm M'Gregor (secretary) having, all ihe details well in hand, whilst the stewards in attendance on the various classes gave ail the assistance that was required of them. Mr Wm. Souter, of Flag Swamp, was field stewards, and in his hands the details had every attention given to them. - The entries in the different * classes, taken all round, were probably less than last year, but there was no decrease in general excellence or interest. The most noticeable deficiency was in the cattle classes, for whilst the shorthorns and Ayrshires were competed for by breeders wellknown in North Otago, the other cattle classes were only sparsely represented or altogether neglected. ~

The sheep classes were as well filled as last year. The absence of the name of Mr D. Boss from the entry list was again noticable this year, and this fact no doubt accounts, as was the case last year, for the emallness, in general, of the entries in the sheep section.

The entries in horses, taken all round, were about up to the, average, for while light horses were down there was_ a gratiiying increase in the draught sections. Included amongst the very representative attendance of North Otago were the Hon. T. T. Duncan, M.P. (Oamaru) and Mr E. H. Olark, M.P. (Chalmers). Amongst the officials of the Otago A. and P. Society present were Messrs H. V. Fulton (secretary) and Jefcoate (committee).

In the sheep section the distinctive feature, undoubtedly, was the Border Leicester classes. Air John Elliott, of Middlemarch, who with Mr T. S. . Little, of Ngapara, judged the sheep, expressed the opinion, when his work was done, that he had never seen a finer lot of Border Leioesters at a country show. There was certainly not a great deal of competition, Mr James Boss, of Palmerston, the wellknown exhibitor, having things all his own way, and annexing the championships in both rams and ewes. The quality of the sheep shown, however, was 6uch as to occasion general admiration. Merinos were a \erj smajl cla^s, Mr J. M'Kenzie, of Dunback. being the only competitor, and only two classes were represented. It in noteworthy in regard to Border Leivesters that the judges at Palmereton yesterday reversed several of the Dunedin. decisions, particularly in regard to the single ewe class, where the Dunedin- placed animals Were completely ignored. The first prize ttvo-tooth ewe w#s not given a place at Tahuna Park 'last week, whilst the first prize of the Dunedin entries was only adjudged worthy of second place yesterday.

i In shorthorn cattle, Mr W: P. Reid, of Maheno, practically had the field to himself and secured all the main honours, both championships falling to his <stock. The animals entered yesterday by Mr Reid which gained prizes distingu'shed themselves ' at Chn&tchurca and Dunedm last year, and at Oamaru this year. The leading class in cattle was the Ayrshire. Mr A. M'Kerrow carried off the championship in bulls w ith Prince Albert, which has only once suffered defeat. There would have been a very poor show of Ayrshire* had it not been I for tne entries of Mr A. Gillies, of Ha-mp- i den. But Mr Gillies'e stock would make j a success of any Ayrshire ring in New ! Zealand or anywhere else. The decisions j of- Oamaru and Dunedin were not in all cases borne out. As the subjoined prize- > list indicates, the opinions of various judges at different Otago shows were yesterday reversed, but the paramount fact is that in the breeding of Ayrshire*, Mr Gillies is i still in the van. j There was a. very good entry in the horse sections, draughts being specially well represented. The quality shown was very good, and the competition keen. Mr A. ] Dalgleish, of Oamaru, annexed the championship for mares, G. Bruce, of Kakanui, securing-the card for reserve champion. In the majority of classes there was a large entry, giving fair competition. As a rule, however, the winner was fairly easily picked. The section was by no means the • least meritorious in the show. I The leaping and riding contest were witnessed with great interest by the large i attendance, and the playing of the Palmerston Band throughout the afternoon was listened to witih attention and appreciation. The following is the prize-liet : — CATTLE. Shobthoen. Judges: Messrs A. Allison (Clarksville) and H. Saunders (Waimete). Bull, three yeara and upwards. Two entries—W. Aubrey (P«lmerston) 1. * !
