THE WORLD'S CHAMPIONSHIP.

WANGANUI, December 7.

On Saturday afternoon both Arnst and Webb put in some good rowing. Webb gave Green (bis pacem-aker) a fairly good start in a two-mile spin, and though the latter rowed particularly well, the champion got very close to him at the finish. Starting off at a 26-27 rats, Webb drove his skiff along in splendid style. The pace was satisfactory all the way. Yesterday afternoon both men- were again afloat. .Starting at 24 to the_ minute, Webb gradually drew ahead, and when a quarter of a mile from the finishing post quickened up considerably, striking 26, and finished at a fast bat, apparently without having turned a hair.

Arnst and Fogwell were out twice, covering- the full course, both morning and afternoon. The morning row was of tlie usual steady ord-er. In the aft&rnoon a large number who watched the men were much impressed with the ease and confidence with whiclf Arnst drove his skiff through the steamer wash, which proved that he is a much better waterman than some are inclined to think. Arnst 'is weight is now 13.1, and he ex.pects to row 13.3.

There is some talk of a double, aculling race between Airnst and Fogwell and Webb and Green. Tt is understood that the friends of the former are willing to back them against the local combination, who did well together as amateurs.

Webb and Arnst did some good work to-day. Both covered the full course, their spins satisfyinig their respective parties. That the race will be an interesting one is evident, as both men are in great form. Webb has .never looked or rowed better, and Arnst is the picture of health, but he does not get from his undoubted strength the power that he should wsre he more scientific.
