THE WOOL SALES.

LONDON, October 19. The wool sales closed very firm. October 20. At the wool sales brisk general competition wa« maintained till tlhe close, Americans bidding keenly. The quantity cold for tbe home market was. 106,500 bales j for the Continent, 102,000} for America, 9C00; held over, 37,000. Compared wtth the July sales, |sjreas.y nwrinos gen-erally were unchanged, but good parcels were occasionally 5 per cent, higher ; scoured merinos were 10 per cent, lower, fine crofctbreds par to 5 per cen-t. higher ; medium and coarse, par to 5 ysv cent, lower; i iipes. and ecourcd, Id lower ; lambs* wool unchanged. At the wool sales the Waihora clip reali&ed 6£d. WELLINGTON, October 21. The High Commi«sioner cabled from London on the 20th hist. :\-" The woo) sales closed with a brisk demand at present-, quotations. Supplies are well cleared, and prospects are rather more encouraging. There is a good demand from America and the Continent. Estimated values: — Superior merino, 10£ dto Is o£d ; medium merino, 8d to lOd ; inferior merino, 6d to 7£d : fine cro? abreds, all srades, 10id to Is Oid : medium, 8d to 10id ; coarse, sid to' Bid." The Now Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company is in receipt of tho following cable advice from its London office regarding th^ clo-ing of thf. fifth series of wool sales:— "As compared with last sale's closing rot«*, prices are about the earn©, for ero-^bred Jambs, greasy crossbred, and fine elipe cro«i;bred ; lower about 5 per cent, for lambs and medium croesbred 1 elipe; lower 5 to 7£ per cent, for scoured merino super; higher about gar to 5 per oent. for greasy merino. Sales closed firmly this day." The National Mortgage and Agency Company of New Zealand ia in receipt of the following message from its London office, dated 20th October :—" Greasy merinos and crossbreds generally at the' oloee of the September sales show a recovery upon opening rate*. Continental buyers are operating freely. For secured and slipes the sales show a drooping - tendency. Biddings are slow.
