LONDON, October 2fr. "Wheat : A shilling lower on the week ; 5500 tons of Australian steamer January and shipment cold at 35s 7£d. October 21. At the tallow sales 1031 casks were offered, and 326 sold. Mutton: Fine, 35s 6d ; medium, 325. Beefi Fine, 33s 6d; medium, 31s. The American visible strpplv of wheat is estimated at 66,603,000 bushels. October 23. The Bank of England returns show the stock of gold coin and Imllion. to be £34,998,000; reserve, £26,195,000 ; proportion of reserve to liabilities, 51.70. The notes in circulation total £28,894,000; public deposits, £4,531,000; other deposits, £46,085,000; Government securities, £16,031,000; and other securities, £26,109.000. The bank rase of interest is 2£ per cent. Consols are quoted at £84 15s. The interest on short loans is 3 per cent. Three months' bills — London, 1| per cent. ; Paris, 2 : i ; Berlin, 2f . The following are the quotations for colonial Government stocks, compared with those mling a week previous: —

The wheat markets are dull owing to large world's weekly shipments and favourable crop reports from the Southern Hemisphere. There is better inquiry for distant cargoes. Fourteen thousand quarters of Australian' January-February shipment and 12,000 quarters of DecemberJanuary shipment sold at 35s 7£d ; steamer parcels, January-FebruaTy, shipment, 35s 6d to 35s 9d ; Australian spot (quiet), 40s to 41s. Flour is scarce. Quotations : 25e 6d to 26s 6d, spot, 'in London. Considerable sales have been made at Glasgow. October- November shipment, 26s 6d to 26s 9d. The butter market is firm. Danish, 129e to 130e. A shipment of Australian butter by the Ormuz arrived in excellent condition, and soldi at 118s to 120s, a few lots realising 1225. The sugar market ie firm. German, IC6 4d; first marks, 12s 2d. The Bradford wool market is unchanged. * October 25. Frozen Meat. — Sheep: Canterbury medium, 4d. Canterbury lambs: Light, s^d; medium. s£d; heavy. 4jd. Beef: New Zealand Plate fores, 3 3-16 d. j Rabbits: Very firm, especially young. Hemp: Quiet and unchanged. Antimony, £9 10s. Copper : Spot, £60 JL5s 6d ; three months, £61 15s. Tin: Spot, £133 10s; three months, £135 53. Lead, £13 6s 3d. Copra: *\Veak. South Sea is freely offered and there is fair bueines at £17 2e 5d for "bags.
