TUAPEKA.

A very large number of electors, including several ladies, met Dr Chappie at Clyde on Friday evening. Dr Hyde, who occupied the chair, paid the candidate a high compliment in to^en of the manner in which he had carried out his duties during the session of Parliament just closed. The candidate, who spoke for an hour and a-half, touched on many of the leading qudAipns of vital interest to the electors aflKe present juncture, among tbese being irrigation, land settlement, and the cutting up of- the runs (the leases of which were now falling mi. and the mining industry, as well as a review of a number of the measures which passed into law last session. At the close of the address a number of questions were answered, after which Mr S. Welsford moved a vote of thanks to tho candidate for his address, and of continued confidence in him «s the district's representative in Parliament, adding that he was well satisfied with the manner in which Dr Chappie- had carried out his duties latt session. Mr R. Lvttle, in seconding the motion, also paid the candidate a compliment in acknowledgment of the qualifications befitting hjm for parliamentary life. Mr George Faehe suggested that the motion be limited to thanks only, as he thought all the candidates should be heard before confidence in any of them was expressed. The meeting, however, woald not listen to the suggestion, and the motion was then put, and declared carried by a large majority.
