TARANAKI.
Indications at No. 2 bore of the Taranaki Petroleum Company have been lately very promising. The pressure of gas has been increasing daily, culminating today in an explosion which sent mud and oil 60 feet into the air. The most reassuring feature is that this bore is now perfectly dry, no water being observable. There' was a sensational runaway at Eltham on the 13th. Two men were pioceeding up Bridjge street in a " long-shafter," when the horse bolted and swerved on to the footpath. It went under twe verandahs, but did no damage beyond chipping the shop fronts, and got to the street again. The two occupants jumped out, and one hit the kerbing and cut his head. The horse galloped to the corner of High street and tried to turn, but the corner was too sharp, and the vehicle struck the verandah post outside a lairtl agent's shop. The horse broke the harness and plunged its head and' two ( feet through the window, valued at about £20.
