VICTORIA LEAGUE COMPETITION.
It will be remembered that last year tins Hon. Spencer Lyttelton offered through the Victoria League the handsome prize of a valuable book for the best essay on "The Relations between Great Britain and her Colonies." The prize, which was open to scholars of the Otago and Southland upper schools, was adjudged to B. Gilmour, of the Southland High School, from a list of 40 competitors. At the beginning of this year the league -offered further prizes of £1 lls 6d, £1 Is, and 10s 6d respectively for a second competition on " The Early Pioneers in New Zealand — Their Difficulties and Successes," open, as previously, to the same schools. The hon. secretary of the league has received the. results by this mail. The first prize ia awarded to F. Simon, of the Southland High School; the second to George Cody, of the same school; and the third to George B. Isdale, of the Waitakr Boys' High School. Due perhaps to the fact that the competitions for this year were offered at the busiest time of thf> school year, there weer but JO competitors. The judging was carried out at Home by a well-known and competent person. It may be added that though Isdale takes the third prize, his style of composition give 9 great promise for the future. It is, however, considered diffuse and not sufficiently, descriptive of the subject prescribed.
