TAKANAKI v. HAWKE'S BAY. NEW PLYMOUTH, August 22.

Th© Taranaki and Hawked Bay representatives met on tibe recreation sports ground this afternoon. The weather conditions were perfect, and the ground was in. good condition. The game was fast and interesting, ending in a win for Tara- , naki by 4- goals to 2. The scores fairly represent the difference between the two teams. The Havdee's Bey players shooting, which is generally their strong feature was defective, many shots being, mifcsed. During the greater part of the second spell Taranaki played a man short, owing to Fagan receiving severe injuries to his knee from a blow from the ball. The goals for the winners were scored by Sargent and Pagan in the first spell, andJohn Harris and James Harris in the second, and for Hawke's Bay by Burnees in the firsb spell and Strattky in the second.

Owing to poor trade three of the leading Scottish ironmasters have decided 'to damp down about a dozen blast furnaces, and shortly only 60 will be in blast in Scotland, as compared with 90 a year ago.
