POMAHAKA DOWNS.

August 15. — Frosty nights and fine days fcave been the order instead of the snowstorm which we were led 1 to believe was coming. Fine drying winds have put the mud and slush out of the way. and the ploughed around is putting on a white appearance. Should this continue for a few days, sowing for another crop will bo started. Turnip ground which a few days ago was very wet is now getting baked, and whei-e the sheen are on turnips they now get the turnip proper instead of turnips and mud. Every one seems busy ploughing. The last section on the Downs to- 'be taken uj is now under thjj management of a Mr Herbert, who, 1 am told, has a large family. I hear that two of his eons are busy turning over the tussock. This is the section that was orieinallv taken up by Mr Stevenson, who built the school. SpeakiiKr of the school, I hear from the chairman of the School Committee that it is no longer to be oalied the Pomahaka Downs school, but the Popotunoa School. This is caused by correspondence addressed to the Downs beine•often sent on to Pomahaka on the Tapanui line. Wairuna, School. — Correspondence has •been passing between her© and the Education Board with reference to the school residence, and I learn that the present residence with ground attached is to be sold and a. new residence is to be put up wnere 4h© school now stands. Now that spring has come I hope the work will not be delayed;. Bachelors' Ball.— Th«» bachelors held thear \nnual ball in Mr Haugh's barn on the evening 1 of Friday, 14th inst. Being a fine night there was a bisr turn out, representatives from Rankleburn, Clyde vale. Waikoikoi. and Wairuna beintr pre<=ent. all bent on makinc the evening full of eniovment. Mr Collins manipulated the fiddle, and was ably assisted by Messrs Bulfin and Madden. About 5 a.m.. Saturday, the dancers could be seen wending their way Jicme in. the bright moonlight.
