TAIAMOA (Southland).

August 10.— An influential meeting was held in the Taiamoa Schoolhouse last month for the purpose of considering the advisaoilifcy of erecting a public hall for the district. Mr Pert, who presided, explained the benefits likely to result from ifche possession of suck a hall. Mr Simmonds and others endorsed his remarks. It was resolved that lists should be prepared, and the district canvassed. The sum of £24 was collected in the room. The adjourned meeting' took place oa August 3, between twenty and thirty gentlemen being present. Mr Pert, the chairman, stated that £61 3s _6d had been subscribed, and after some discussion it was resolved that a, public hall should, be built. A Managing Committee was' then appointed, consisting pf Messrs T. Pert, M- M'Dowall, J. Nunn, G. Glover, EL M'Dowall, W. R. Ronald, and J. Simmonds (secretary). It was decided that permission be Hsked from the Education Board to build the hall in the school ground, and that the dimensions should be 40ft long, 20ft wide, and 12ft studs. It was resolved that the canvassers continue collecting until the next meeting.

Taiamoa Basket Social. — A successful social was held in the Taiamoa Schoolihouee on August 7. The schoolroom was packed in every corner, and both young and old evinced a lively interest in the entertainment. Mr T. , Pert occupied the chair. The programme was a lengthy one of some 30 items. The Misses Nunn oDened with a pianoforte duet. This, as well as the items following, were well rendered and much appreciated. The following is a list of .the performers: — Chorus, "Drummer boy," the school children ; alee, "List to the cenvent bells," Misse Wilson and schoolchildren; Indian clubs, Messrs M. Burns and C. Eggleston ; r-ecitation, "People Will Talk," Miss A. Pert; pianoforte solo, Miss A. E. T. Simmonds ; duet. violin and piano, Mr. J. W. Wilson and Miss Nunn; recitation. "A Troublesome Bicycle," Master V. Wilson; song, "Killarney," Mra Simmonds ; song, "Daisy Bell," Master J. Nunn; reading. Mr T. Pert ; sang, Mr Glover ; song, "My own New Zealand home," Mrs H. M'Dowall; Eecito-tion, "The Blue and the Grey," Miss M". Glover; banjo breakdown and plantation songs, Mr Simmonds. This terminated the firat half of the oropcramme. and during the" interval following refreshments were- handed, round. The -programme was then continued, the per formers already mentioned again takinwr <part. The accompaniments were supplied by Mrs Simmonds and Hiss E. Simmonds. Votes of thanks were passed to the performers for the delightful sntertainment, and also to the chairman.
