WEST TAIERI HORTICULTURAL SHOW.

The autumn show, under the auspices of the West Taieri Horticultural Society, held in the Societies' Hall, Outran!, on Saturday, was marred to some extent by the severe gale whioh eet in after midnight on Friday and continued with more or less force up to noon on Saturday. The effects of the storm were particularly noticeable in the paucity of exhibits in the flower section, as well as in the quality of the blooms and foliage exhibited. There was a bareness about the flower and foliage tables which i 6 quite unusual at the society's shows. The fruit, vegetable, pastry, and baking sections of the autumn exhibition were, however, better than usual in quality, and the entries were in excess of those of former years. In pot foliage plants the most conspicuous exhibit was that of Miss E. Kempshell, who included in the four distinct genera class some good specimens of cyperus and asparagus, and the same lady in the cut flower section showed some nice ealpiglosses and cosmos in a- collection of 12 distinct varieties of flowers. In the last-named class Mrs W. Thompson exhibited some good specimens of calliopsis and nemesia. The made-up floral work, particularly in gents' buttonholes and ladies' sprays, was, as usual, excellent, and competition was close. Geraniums and pelargoniums in pots and cut flowers were well represented by Mrs G. M'Donald, and Mrs J. Dow exhibited some good, healthy specimens of double petunias. Mrs A. Burns showed two good flowers in the rose class, and the collection of out flowers by C. Low merited the award given. The exhibits of fruit were particularly good, cooking and dessert apples anfi plums, as well as pears, being a distinct advance upon similar exhibits shown in former yeare. Peasgood's Noneuch secured first honours in cookers, and in desserts some golden piopins in perfect condition secured the red ticket. A large tray of fruit of all seasonable varieties, shown by Mrs J. Fulton, evoked favourable comment. Some of the pear exhibits were barely in condition, but in size and substance all were beyond the usual standard; Williams s s Bon Chretien secured the red ticket in the class. Plums, all round, were in good condition, and garden-grown tomatoes were first-class specimens. In vegetables, table cabbages snowed signs of the drought, and were affected with blight; but red cabbages were solid, well-grown, and hard. Carrots, potatoes, onions, parsnips, eschalots were represented by wellgrown and matured exhibits. A feature of the vegetable section which met with the judge's hearty approval, and whioh could be imitated by other societies, was a class which provided for the exhibition of baskets of vegetables, containing a cabbage, two turnips, two .carrots, three onions, six pods of beans, and two sprigs of parsley. In the baking and honey sections Miss E. Kempshell exhibited some excellent specimens of extracted and of comb honey, and Mrs J. Dow carried off first honours for girdle and oven scones, milk bread, and also secured the red ticket for home-made paetry and a nice tray of tea cakes. Mrs W. Nichoi, Mrs Parsons, Mrs A. Cameron, Miss Thomson, Miss T. M'Leod, and Miss E. C. Sparks were also successful exhibitors in the baking section, the exhibit in each class being excellent.
