LONDON, MaiLh 16. At Socialist meetings at Battersea on Sunday Mr John Burns -was bitterly attacked. Mr Macpherson, a member of the House of Commons, in a speech at Wereston, declared that Mr Burns's speech had sent a thrill of disgust through the House of Commons. Mr Whitely (Government Whip), speaking at Pudsey, iv referring to the Liberal defections in connection with Friday's vote, declared that a small section of Liberals was always in a state of semiSocialism. They considered that they were entitled to run with a Liberal hare and to hunt with the Socialist hounds. Though they were wedded to Liberalism they thought they were entitled to philander and flirt with Socialism in order to better their position with their constituents. But they could not serve God and mammon, and if the country thought that Liberals were saturated or tainted with Socialism there would be a deplorable split in the party. Evidence that they would lose the support of the vast bulk of moderate opinion was already accumulating..
