WANGAGNUI AUTUMN MEETING. First Day— Thursday, March 5. The Wangianui Jockey Club's autumn meeting was commenced to-day. The weather was cold and showery, but there was a good attendance. The sum of £11,048 was put through the totalisator, as against £12,406 on the first day of the last meeting. Thirtysix bookmakers were present. Results: — STEWARDS' HANDICAP, Of 150SOV8. One mile. Mr H M'Manaway's blk c Mahuta, by Mahaki— Spring, *4yrs, 9.0 (S. Reid) .. 1 Mr Mesroa's Waipaku, 7.6 (M'Kay) .. 2 Mr Webb's Dear Dolly, 6.18 (F. CoUman) 3 Also started: Gleam 6.10. A good start was. effected, aave that Gleam oa-rxied the barriecr for about 50 yards. Dear Dolly led round the bend, with Mahuta alongside, and Waipaku about a length away, Gleam lying last. This order was maintained along the back and until turning into the straight, when Mahuta, who had been running freely, drew away and led Dear Dolly by half a length, Waipaku coming up fast. A fine race down the straight resulted in Mahuta winning easily by a clear length. Waipaku mad* a big run, and beat Dear Dolly on the post. Time, lmin 43 3-se«c. From a good start Claremont went lo the front, followed by Moeraki, Pantaloon, Caohuca, and Maui. The order over tha hurdle in front of the stand was Claremont, Pantaloon, Cachuca, and Moeraki, with Cassiopea last. Turning into the back Pantaloon and Maui went up, the formes leading Claremont over the next hurdle. Claremont led into the straight, Josely followed by Pantaloon, Cachuca, and Maui. An exciting race to the post ensued, and Maui, coming with a great rush on the outside, snatched a viotory from Claromonr, who had appeared to' have the race in hand. At the half-mile Immolation took command and Aorangi was only a length behind thai leader when the straight was entered. Immolation swerved at the jump and nearly upset Aorangi, whose jockey oleverly saved himself.
