.*. _ WELCOME RAIN AT SYDNEY. VIOLENT GALE AT TOWNSVILLE. SYDNEY, January 30. There is great heat in this State. At Bourke the thermometer registered 118 in the shade. The first good rain for a long time fell here last night. February 2. A furious •westerly gale set in late last nig-ht, but it lasted only a few lu>urs. The Moeraki did not clear the heads tili daylight this morning. The St. Kilda, which arrived from Whangape, was hove to in the gale 52 miles off the heads, but she was blown up to the heads before it abated. February 3. The MoniSßonol rains have drenched the country, particularly in the dairying areas, wihere it was so much needed. BRISBANE, January 30. A violent gale is raging at Townsville. No damage is recorded so far. January 31. Twenty inches of rain fell at Croydon in seven hours. A number of bridges were washed away, and the railway line was considerably damaged.
