SCHOOL COMMISSIONERS

The usual monthly meeting of the Otago School Commissioners was held on the 28th ult.; present— Messrs W. Dallas (chairman), D. Borne, C. H. Wilmot, T. MacGibbon, and the Hon. H. Feldwick. The Southland County Council applied for grants of £135 and £150 for roadtnakmg.— Resolved that £70 of the £135 be granted, and that £100 of the £150 be granted from goldfielda revenue, conditionally upon the oouncil spending pound for pound, and that the roads be kept free from destruction by A report was received from Mr Mac Gibbon and the ranger on the proposed groin for protection of sections 17 and 18, block lA, Waikaia, and on the application from Mr T. Hickey for rebate of rent.— Reports received and adopted. A report was received from Mr Boine on proposed exchange of land at Otekaike, Maerewhemia district, with copy of valuation made by himself and Mr John Sutherland, the Government assessor.— Received ; valuation approved; the surrender of lease to be accepted, and land offered in one lot for 21 years on the usual conditions ao upset rental of 7s 6d per acre. The Ranger reported x>n proposed exchange of =ectdon 59, block V, Moeraki, for sections 2of 18 and 42 of same block.— lt was resolved to agree to the exchange of section 2 of 18, block V, for part of section 2 of 43, of same block. A letter was received from the Secretary for Education suggesting that the neuter of having certain map reserves vested m the School Commissioners should be discussed by the commissioners with the Commissioner of Corwn Lands, Dunedin.— Consideration deferred. , , , A letter was received from the clerk of tne Southland County Council asking th& commiasionera to leave a track through reserve adjoining run 325, "Weaidonsid© district.— Council to be informed that tho present occupier's tenure is burdened with the condition that the occupier of adjoining land is to be allowed ingress and egress. A letter was received from John Templeton lessee of section part 1. block V, and section 6, block IV, Toi-Tois district, applying for 3000 4in tile 3. — Two-thirds valuation to be allowed. A letter was Tead from, L. M iienzie, lessee of section 65, block I. Waikaia district, stating that he has decided to leave one drain open for this y-eur, and applying for the following tiles: — Ten chains 12in, two chains of 6in, and 18 chains of 3in.— One-quaTter valuation to be allowed. Consideration of a letter from J. M. Price, lessee of section 39, Eyre district, asking if he will be allowed valuation at end of lease if he builds a dwelling and outhouses and plants 12 chains of willows to protect land from the river. — Consideration was held over. Andrew Hall, lessee of section part 58, block I, Mataura Hundred, was granted sanction to add fchxee rooms to dwelling-house, and erect 12-stalled byre and part shed. James Cree wrote complaining that he erected 77 chains of boundary fence on education reserve at Maerewhenua, for which he had not been paid by the lessee. — Agreed to charge an incoming tenant; rate to be fixed by ranger. An application was received from Joseph Davidson for assistance towards drainploughing sections 53 and 54, block I, "Waikaia district. — One-quarter outlay tc be allowed. T. P. Dwyer applied for lease of sections 8 and 9, b.ock VII, South Mossburn, at 30s per annum. — To be offered at auction at end of present term. A number of applications for transfer were agreed to. The Secretary reported the following apportionment of rents for quarter ending 31st December, 1907: — Otago Education Board, £3786 17s lid; Southland Education Board, £1572 8s; Otego Boys' and Girls' High Schools, £192 13s 9d; Southland Boys' and Girls' High Schools, £130 17s; Waitaki High School, £76 lls 9d. — Noted. A memo, from the Paymaster-general stated that goldfields revenue for the month of December, 1907, amounting to £10 17s 6d had been paid to the commissioner's credit. — Noted. The Ranger reported that certain tenants were nort carrying out the conditions of their leases in regard to keeping down noxious weeds. — Tenants to olear weeds within one month in terms of leases. Accounts amounting to £99 19s 2d were passed for payment.

A staff of seven men is now engaged in the work of erecting a model pa at Whakarewarewa. The celebrated patalca that was at the Exhibition is to b« erected there.
